The Science of Music and Mental Resilience

Hey there, Music Nerd!

Did you know that music is a neurological phenomenon that can drive motivation?

That’s right! Even though music is auditory stimuli, it creates a propensity for action across our entire body. This can increase our mental focus and dedication during our workouts (Huberman, 2023).

The impact physical training has on mental health has been studied and documented in abundance, and should be something we include regularly to bolster mental resilience.

Try listening to a faster-cadence song the next time you need to kick-start your motivation on your way to the gym!

Music Improves Learning

Listening to music during work breaks, particularly songs that we find familiar, uplifting and motivating, can enhance cognitive performance and our ability to learn upon returning to our work tasks in silence (Huberman, 2023).

Music Boosts Mood

Have you ever noticed that sad songs tend to make you feel sad?

And happy songs make you feel happy?

This is because the mathematical components of music, including frequency and cadence of sounds, activate brain circuits that fire neurons which match the same frequencies we’re listening to.

When listening to music, sound frequencies are effectively translated into the brain’s language of electro chemical signals, leading to the release of neurochemicals that induce different emotional states in both the brain and the body.

“In other words, sound causes a sound-dependent pharmacologic concert withing your brain. That fact should make it incredibly clear, as to why certain music, even in the absence of lyrics, can evoke certain emotional states.” – Dr. Huberman, How to Use Music to Boost Motivation, Mood & Improve Learning

Much like music that motivates the body to move, music that helps shift peoples’ emotional states from less happy to happier tends to be within the range of 140bpm-150bpm or faster, like this one.

It’s hard not to feel even a little happier after listening to that. 😉
